Wait wait wait hold the phone.

Those appear to be USMC-issue M16A4s alongside the soldiers in the photo: 

Aussie infantry would most likely be equipped with the F88 “Au-Steyr” (a license-made Steyr AUG).

HK416s and M4A1s are utilized by special forces units, but neither of those has the hollow fiberglass stock of a full-size M16. 

The ASDF also uses the KAC SR25 marksman’s rifle, which does have the correct stock, but is equipped with a straight 20-round magazine.

The rifle seen clearly in the photo has a curved 30-round 5.56mm STANAG magazine, which appears to be an American-made Magpul PMag w/built in viewing window.

The only logical conclusion is that these soldiers are not Australians, and are most likely US soldiers or marines. They could be Canadians equipped with Diemaco C7A1s (license built M16A4s). Either way, the photo’s use in a book about Australian soldiers calls into question the vetting and research practices of the publisher. Not commenting on the original tweet, just pointing out an inconsistency.
